Shri Mahalakshmi Mandir Mumbai History

The history of Shri Mahalakshmi Temple, Mumbai, is that when there was British rule in India, work was about to start on a project in which a wall was to be built to connect Worli to Malabar Hill Khadi. The responsibility of this work was given to the Indian engineer Shri Ramji Shivji Prabhu. Later, when this work started, many problems started arising in it. The wall always used to collapse due to the flow of sea water.

This work continued in this condition, but no success was achieved; all the people doing this work were troubled. After some time, Ramji Shivji Prabhu, who were handling this work, had a dream in which the Goddess told them that three idols are buried in the Worli Bay and they should be taken out and placed on the top of the mountain there, and a temple should be built there. After that, he accepted the goddess’s words and promised her that he would build a temple there.

Only after that, the work going on from Worli to Malabar Hill Bay was successful. After that, Ramji Shivji Prabhuji took the land from the British for the construction of this temple and built the Shri Mahalakshmi temple at a cost of about 80 thousand rupees. Shri Mahalakshmi temple was built between the years 1761 to 1771. Since then, Maa Lakshmi, Maa Kali, and Maa Saraswati are seated inside the temple. And today, thousands of devotees come to this temple to seek the blessings of Goddess Mahalakshmi.
