Shri Babulnath Mandir, Mumbai – Timings, History and how to reach

Shri Babulnath Mandir is one of the most famous ancient temples in Mumbai and a center of faith for Hindus. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and has an ancient Shiva Linga, which is about 350 years old. Shri Babulnath Mandir is situated on a small hillock of Malabar Hill in Khareghat Colony, near Girgaon Chowpatty. The nearest railway station to the temple is Charni Road or Grant Road.

Shri Babulnath Mandir history

The history of the Shri Babulnath Mandir is that many years ago, there used to be a shepherd at a place called Malabar Hill, and the owner of that shepherd was a rich goldsmith named Panduranga. Panduranga had a lot of cows, which were looked after by a man named Babul. He would always take the cows for grazing, and Babul would do all the work from milking them to other tasks.

When Babul was milking all the cows, it was found that the cow named Kapila was not giving milk. After that, Babul asked why it not giving milk. Then Babul told that it is not a matter of today, Kapila always gives her milk at a fixed place in the pasture. Hearing this, Panduranga was surprised as to why Kapila gives all her milk in the pasture. Panduranga became curious to see and know this scene.

The next day, Panduranga went to the pasture to see all this, and he saw exactly that Kapila was giving all her milk at her designated place. Seeing this, Panduranga was surprised and he ordered to dig at that place. When the place was excavated, a Swayambhu Shivling was found inside it. Later, a temple was built at that place to worship that Shivling, which later came to be known as Babulnath Mandir.

The Shivling and idols in the Babulnath temple, built due to the Shivling found in the pasture, were installed by the king Bhimdev in the 12th century. Time passed, and with time, the temple sank into the ground and disappeared. After that, during the excavation in the 18th century, all these idols were taken out, and the construction work of the temple started again in the year 1780.

When the temple was being excavated, 5 idols were found during the excavation, which included Shivling, Ganesh Ji, Hanuman Ji, Maa Parvati, and another idol. The Panchami idol was broken, so it was immersed in the sea. Apart from that, the temples of the four idols still exist, which everyone is fortunate to visit.

After that, the construction of the temple continued, in which there were many interruptions, but due to everyone’s participation, the temple had taken its complete form by the year 1900. Since then, till today, the temple is in its place and construction work continues in the temple according to time. In today’s time, the temple remains a major center of devotion and faith for the followers of the Hindu religion.

To go to Shri Babulnath Mandir, you have to come to Charni Road Railway Station from your destination. You can also get off at Grant Road Station. Take a taxi from the station to reach the temple, or you can also walk to reach. You can reach the temple by walking for about 20 to 25 minutes. Shri Babulnath Mandir’s nearest station is Charni Road.

By Air: The nearest airport to reach Shree Babulnath Temple is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai. After reaching here, you can reach Babulnath Temple by taxi, bus, or train.

By Train: The nearest railway station to reach Shree Babulnath Temple is Charni Road on the western line. The distance of Babulnath Temple from Charni Road is about 1 km. You can take a taxi from here, or you can also go on foot.

By Road: To go by road, you can reach Babulnath Temple via the Western Highway and the link road of Gamdevi Malabar Hill.

• Charni road to Babulnath Mandir Distance: Charni Road to Babulnath Mandir Distance is about 1.5 kilometers. It takes around 10 minutes to cover this distance.

Shri Babulnath Mandir timings

Shree Babulnath Mandir opening time is from 6 AM to 9 PM. During this time, you can visit the temple for darshan any time.

Shree Babulnath Mandir Aarti timings

The first Aarti in Shree Babulnath Temple takes place at 5.30 am, and the last Aarti takes place at 8.30 pm. Aarti takes place several times a day in the temple, the timings of which are given below.

Morning: 5:30 To 6:30
Afternoon: 11:30 To 12:30
Evening: 5:30 To 6:30
Night: 8:00 To 8:30
(Monday: 12:00 to 1:00 pm)

Shree Babulnath Mandir tickets

There is no ticket in the Shree Babulnath temple, but since the temple is built on a hill, there is a lift facility here. To reach the main courtyard of the Babulnath temple, one has to climb 108 stairs. But if you are old or for any reason you have trouble climbing the stairs, then you can use the lift built into the temple.

The fare for Shree Babulnath Mandir tickets to go up to the temple by lift is only Rs. 1. A slip is issued for this, and you can come back down by showing it at the time of return in the lift.
