After killing Kansa, both brothers Krishna and Balram had an argument among themselves, Krishna was saying that I have killed Kansa and Balram was saying that I have killed him.

When their argument grew more heated, Lord Shiva appeared there and explained to both the brothers. Lord Shiva explained to both the brothers and said that both of you have killed Kansa, Lord Shri Krishna had killed Kansa by using his trick and Balram had killed Kansa by using his strength.

After that both the brothers came to their senses and their dispute was resolved. After that when they started leaving Mathura, they asked lord Shiva to stay there and help the Brajwasi. And Shri Krishna said that from now on you will be known here by the name of Rangeshwar Mahadev and then this place was named Rangeshwar Mahadev Mandir.

That is why Rangeshwar Mahadev is known as the Kotwal of the south of Mathura city. Statues of other gods and goddesses are also made in the Rangeshwar temple, to have darshan of whom devotees come to the Rangeshwar temple daily. Rangeshwar Mahadev always protects Mathura city and its Brajwasi and fulfils all their wishes.
