According to mythology, Kusum Sarovar Govardhan is the place where lord Shri Krishna used to come to meet Radha Ji. Radha ji used to come here with her friends to pluck flowers from the gardens, then Shri Krishna used to meet her. Kusum Sarovar was built in memory of Maharaja Surajmal Singh of Bharatpur by his son, Maharaja Jawahar Singh.
The story behind Kusum Sarovar
The place where Kusum Sarovar is located is an ancient place. It is said about Kusum Sarovar that there was a beautiful flower garden here in which very beautiful flowers were found. Lord Shri Krishna’s beloved Shri Radha Rani used to come here with her friends to pluck flowers for worship. When Radha used to come here, Shri Krishna used to come here to meet her.
Many divine acts of Lord Shri Krishna took place at this place; apart from this, this place is also known as Kusum Van and Kusum Sakhi ki Kunj. The story of this place, named Venu Gunthan, is that Shri Krishna made a bun of Radha’s hair here. Near the entrance of Kusum Sarovar, there is a temple of Ban Bihari Ji, which has the idol of Shri Krishna and Radha. The idol depicts how Shri Krishna is playing the flute and Shri Radha is watching him in the mirror.
Near Kusum Sarovar Kund is Narad Kund, where Narad ji sat and composed the Bhakti Sutra. It is believed that God had told Narad ji to go to Braj and compose the Bhakti Sutras of religion. After that, Narad ji composed Bhakti Sutras sitting near Govardhan mountain. Narad Kund and Kusum Sarovar are situated near Govardhan mountain, from where the mountain can be seen.
Kusum Sarovar History
The history of Kusum Sarovar is that earlier, there used to be many Kadam trees at this place, and due to the many flowers, it was later named Kusum Sarovar. Kusum Sarovar Govardhan is also famous as the place where Lord Shri Krishna and Radha used to meet. Even today, Kadam trees are present around Kusum Sarovar.
Kusam Sarovar was renovated by Maharaja Jawahar Singh, son of Maharaja Surajmal Singh of Bharatpur, Rajasthan, in memory of his parents. The Samadhi of Maharaja Surajmal Singh is also built at this place. Apart from this, domes of his two queens, Kishori and Hansiya, are also built. There are very beautiful paintings on the inside of these domes, which depict the exploits of the Maharaja and Radha Krishna.
Kusum Sarovar is built on about 450 feet of land and is 60 feet deep. The architecture of Kusum Sarovar is influenced by Rajasthani style, and this building is a grand and beautiful one made of sandstone. Thousands of Krishna devotees come to visit this place to see its beauty. Fountains are installed inside the pond, and the whole temple is decorated with beautiful lights, which adds to its beauty at night.
How to reach Kusum Sarovar Govardhan
Kusum Sarovar is situated between Radha Kund and Govardhan on the Govardhan Parikrama route. If you have gone for the 21 km Parikrama of Govardhan, then you will see this place after Radha Kund in your Parikrama. You can stop at this place for some time and admire its beauty, and sit here and remember Shri Krishna and sing his bhajans in peace.
By Road
If you are coming to Govardhan by road in your personal vehicle, then to reach Kusum Sarovar, you will have to come to Govardhan, and after that, you can come to Kusum Sarovar. If you are coming from Chhatikara and Vrindavan, then Kusum Sarovar will come before Govardhan. You can easily reach Kusum Sarovar Govardhan from Delhi, Agra, and Mathura via National Highway 19 from Chhatikara.
Delhi to Kusum Sarovar distance is around 174 km, Agra to Kusum Sarovar distance is 80 km, and Mathura to Kusum Sarovar distance is 23 km. If you are coming from Delhi, then the better option would be to come via Chhatikara, and if you are coming from Agra, Mathura, Bharatpur, then you can reach Govardhan via Mathura’s Govardhan Chauraha.
By Train
To reach Kusum Sarovar by train, first you have to come to Mathura Junction station, after that you will easily get a bus, taxi, or auto to Kusum Sarovar Govardhan from there. The Mathura Junction to Kusum Sarovar distance is about 25 km, and it may take about 45 minutes to reach Kusum Sarovar, Govardhan.
By Airplane
To reach Kusum Sarovar Govardhan by air, the nearest airport to Govardhan is in Agra and Delhi, through which you can reach Delhi or Agra, and from there you can easily reach Kusum Sarovar by train, bus, and taxi. The distance of Kusum Sarovar Govardhan from Delhi Airport is about 180 km, and it is about 80 km from Agra.
