The History of Gokarneshwar Mahadev Mandir Mathura

In Bhagwat, there is an story of Gokarnath Mahadev Temple Mathura, according to which there used to be a Brahmin named Atmdev, whose wife’s name was Dhundhli and both of them had no children, one day a divine sage gave a fruit to Atmdev and said that make your wife consume this fruit, by consuming this fruit you will get a son.

But his wife Dhundhli did not believe what Atmdev said and she fed the fruit to her cow. After some time, a boy was born from the cow’s ear and he was named Gokarna because he was born from the cow’s ear. Gokarna used to do pooja and keep company with saints since childhood, and because of this he became a great scholar.

Later, Gokarna’s mother Dhundhli adopts her sister’s child to increase her lineage and names him Dhundhkari who was of demon nature. Dhundhkari always used to do bad deeds, due to which he died an untimely death after some time. After death, Dhundhkari gets the ghost form due to which he keeps wandering and troubling people. One day Dhundhkari comes in Gokarna’s dream and says Brother save me and do something so that my soul gets peace.

When everyone gets very worried, they come to Gokarna and say that you are such a great scholar and do devotion, then find some solution to this. After that, Gokarna ji organizes a 7-day Bhagwat and buries a bamboo stick in that Bhagwat which has 7 knots. And makes the vagina of Dhundhakari reside on that bamboo. After that, he reads one chapter of Bhagwat every day, the reason for which is Chatak caste on one bamboo knot every day.

After doing this for 7 days, all the knots of the bamboo wood crack and Dhundhakari’s soul gets peace. After that, Gokarna sits at this place and does penance of Lord Shiva, Pleased with his penance, Lord Shiva gives him a boon that in Kaliyug you will be worshipped in my form, since then till today Gokarna is sitting here in the form of Shiva. And after this his name became Gokarneshwar Mahadev.

The statue of Gokarneshwar Mahadev is about 6 feet tall and you would not have seen a statue like this anywhere else. Gokarneshwar Mahadev has the most different statue in the world. In this statue, one hand of Gokarnath Mahadev is on his heart and the other hand is on his penis. This gives the message that the person who controls his mind and sexual senses can do anything in life. And by controlling these two senses, he is protecting the devotees in Kaliyug.
