As per Hindu mythology, the story behind Ganesh Chaturthi begins with a well-known legend in which Goddess Parvati shaped Lord Ganesha from the sandalwood paste she used during her bath. She breathed life into the idol and instructed it to guard the entrance while she bathed. When Lord Shiva returned and Ganesha stopped him, a fierce battle ensued between the two, which ended with Lord Shiva beheading Ganesha.
When Lord Shiva saw Goddess Parvati sad, he promised to give life to her son. He then replaced Ganesha’s head with an elephant’s head, giving him a unique look and divine powers. From that day on, Lord Ganesha became a symbol of new beginnings, wisdom, and the removal of all obstacles. Even today, it is customary to invoke and worship Lord Ganesha before beginning any auspicious task.
