History of Shri Radha Raman Temple, Vrindavan
The Sri Radha Raman Temple in Vrindavan was founded in 1542 AD by Gopal Bhatta Goswami, one of the six Goswamis of Vrindavan and a close associate of the great 16th-century saint and social reformer Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Born in a South Indian Brahmin family, Gopal Bhatta travelled to Vrindavan on the instructions of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to preach the teachings of bhakti and to discover the lost places associated with the pastimes of Lord Krishna.
Gopal Bhatta Goswami used to worship the Shaligram Shila, which was given to him by Chaitanya Mahaprabhu himself. It is believed that one day, overwhelmed with devotion and longing to serve the Lord in his beautiful form, Gopal Bhatta Goswami prayed fervently to the Shaligram. In response to his pure devotion, the Shaligram Shila appeared in an attractive form with all the ornaments and attributes of Sri Radha Raman Ji.
This event is considered to be a miraculous “swayambhu” (self-manifested) form of the deity, making Shri Radha Raman Ji one of the rarest and holiest deities in Vrindavan.
Architecture of Radha Raman Temple
The temple’s architecture reflects the traditional style of Vrindavan temples, which is simple yet spiritually uplifting. Unlike most temples, Shri Radha Raman Ji does not have a separate idol of Radharani beside him. However, the crown placed beside the deity represents Shri Radha Rani, signifying Radharani’s eternal presence with Lord Shri Krishna.
The main idol of Shri Radha Raman is extremely beautiful. The idol is small, about 30 cm, but is filled with intricate details- each curve and feature is perfectly carved, believed to be supernaturally created. Even today the priests of the Sri Radha Raman Mandir say that over the centuries, the appearance of the idol has changed slightly, as if the Lord is alive and is aging.
