Story of the Daan Ghati Temple, Govardhan
The story of the place where the Daan Ghati temple is built is something like this: earlier in Braj, everyone had milk, curd, and Makhan in their house, and most of the people used to run their household by selling these. The women of Braj, who are also called Gopis, often used to take their Makhan to Mathura and Vrindavan through this route.
As we all know that Lord Shri was very fond of butter, for which he sometimes used to steal Makhan. But when Shri Krishna came to know that all the Gopis passed through this route of Govardhan with Makhan, then he used to come and gather at this place with all his friends. And he used to tell all the gopis to pay him tax. The gopis were very surprised at this, and they started saying, For what should we pay you tax?Â
Hearing all this, Shri Krishna smiled and said, that I am the king here. If you have to go through this route to sell your Makhan, then you all will have to give me Makhan as tax. Hearing this, all the gopis started laughing and said that they would not give. Then Shri Krishna said that if you do not donate Makhan, then I will not let you go from here. After that, all the gopis donated Makhan, and only after that, Shri Krishna let them go from there.
Since then, Makhan was donated at this place, and Lord Shri Krishna used to come here every day to take the donation of Makhan. Makhan was donated at this place; hence, from then on, this place was named Daan Ghati. Today, a grand temple of Giriraj Ji Maharaj is built here, which we know as the Daan Ghati Temple, Govardhan.
